Management Accountant, Exeter Science Park

Exeter Science Park Ltd (ESPL) helps innovative STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medical) companies to deliver extraordinary growth. It is the result of a vision to develop a Science Park in Exeter to facilitate the growth of innovative, fast-growing STEMM companies that exploit world-class research, create high-quality jobs, attract and retain talent, and drive productivity and economic growth.
ESPL is on target to become financially sustainable in 2021 based on it owning, operating or providing services to six buildings:
- The Science Park Centre (30,000ft2) with café, meeting rooms and hot desking facilities that was opened in 2015.
- The Lamarr, Newton & Turing Buildings comprising 27,000ft² were completed in November 2018. The buildings were pre let and after a range of tenant fit outs were fully occupied by April 2019.
- The fully funded Ada Lovelace Building development (20,000ft²) is currently under construction, due for completion in February 2021
- A new fully funded 10, 000ft² Grow-out Building is due to start construction in February 2021.
By 2022, we expect around 700 high-value, knowledge-based jobs to be based at the Science Park. However, we are about to start planning for the next phase of growth requiring the development of around 180,000 sqft of offices, laboratories and other technology facilities which is expected to cost over £60M. We expect this to result in a further 1,500 jobs at the Science Park by 2027.
Meanwhile, individual companies are growing from hot desk to small and then larger office suites in the Science Park Centre (SPC) before looking to relocate to the Lamarr, Newton & Turing Buildings or new Ada Lovelace Building.
ESPL is also expecting to develop a membership scheme to improve its impact across the region.
This is a dynamic and impactful new role which provides scope for development and progression in line with the organisation’s ambitious growth strategy. Reporting to the Senior Finance Manager, your central purpose will be to successfully manage and coordinate a range of operational financial processes at ESPL, ensuring its smooth and efficient running.
Working collaboratively is a key strength of the team at ESPL, and it is important that you demonstrate this quality in all aspects of your role. You will make a key contribution to investment and funding activities, through supporting with setting budgets and implementing robust management accounting practices to ensure investment is used effectively, as well as coordinating the end-to-end process for ensuring financial compliance with funder requirements.
It will be important for you to provide proactive support to the Senior Finance Manager, by assisting to produce detailed annual budgets and longer-term forecasts to be reviewed at Board level, ensuring the information provided is accurate and achievable, and remaining mindful of the organisational strategy. You will also closely monitor financial KPIs across ESPL to assess performance and inform decision-making, and will collaborate and build strong working relationships with on site internal and external stakeholders, ensuring that developments are in line with budgetary constraints and spend is effectively managed.
On a day-to-day basis, you will be responsible for implementing, embedding and maintaining financial processes and operations, using financial systems to your advantage, mitigating any financial risk and ensuring the required financial controls are in place, maintaining an eye for continuous improvement at all times. This will include ensuring that ESPL has effective processes in relation to accounts payable, financial risk management, procurement and supplier invoice payments.
In addition, you will manage the tenant invoice process, collating the required data and preparing accurate invoices to be delivered in a timely manner, monitoring payments and investigating any late payments, where necessary. Alongside your responsibility for end-to-end processes, you will also play an important role in supporting the Senior Finance Manager in providing the required financial information to inform strategic decisions, including developing and preparing regular management accounts, financial reports and any other financial management information as requested.
Monitoring and analysing ESPL’s cash position and the risk profile of existing tenants, raising any issues to the Senior Finance Manager, as well as preparing statutory returns and statements, including VAT, are also crucial elements to this role. Similarly, you will be responsible for reporting on annual service charges, ensuring the budget is sufficient and that compliance in line with tenant agreements is maintained. This is a varied role, and you will also hold responsibility for liaising closely with external auditors and completing the relevant tax pack and service charge information, to ensure the year-end financial audit takes place smoothly.
You will be excited to take ownership of a range of financial operational processes at ESPL, and will be passionate about developing your career and skill set in management accounting. It is essential that you have achieved an AAT Level 4 (or equivalent) qualification as a minimum, with some post-qualification experience.
Although there are plenty of opportunities to grow and develop in this role, you will have experience in managing and administering operational and financial processes, developing financial reports and management information to support decision-making, and in producing accurate management accounts. Whilst not essential, it would be beneficial for you to have experience of working within an SME or start-up environment, particularly in the property industry, as well as in managing third party suppliers and working with stakeholders from a range of private and public sectors.
Your IT skills are one of your strengths, particularly in relation to making the best use of Excel (such as in setting up and managing pivot tables and lookup formulas). You will have excellent knowledge of financial packages, including Xero, and will have strong technical knowledge to rely upon in relation to management accounting activities, coupled with the ability to present financial information in a user-friendly format.
Alongside your technical ability, you are naturally good at working with others and thrive upon working collaboratively to deliver joint goals. You enjoy taking initiative and working proactively to achieve your objectives and ideally, also have strong skills in influencing.
